Foreword
The period in which the kathina can be spread is within one month after the end of the rains retreat, from the first day of the waning moon of the eleventh lunar month to the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. In fact, this one month in which the kathina can be spread is the last month of the season. Normally, the monastic discipline allows this month to be used as the time for seeking and making robes, which can be counted as part of preparing oneself to set out wandering for most of the remaining year. It thus equips the army of the Dhamma, whose duty is to spread the Buddha’s teaching and carry it forward.
Most importantly, kathina merit is the great merit of the year because it is kāladāna, timely giving: giving that can be done only at its proper time, limited to once a year. The benefit of timely giving is that one will not be disappointed. Among the Buddha’s disciples, the one who made timely gifts to the highest degree was Venerable Añña Koṇḍañña, and so he was in the first group to hear the Buddha’s teaching and the first person to attain awakening in the dispensation. This is the fruit of timely giving.

What Is Kathina? Its Origin and the Kathina Robe
Kathina literally means the wooden frame for sewing robes; the kathina cloth is one of the three robes. The Buddha let monks spread it after the rains. -
Spreading and Offering the Kathina, and Its Five Benefits
Spreading the kathina is the monks' act; offering it lets laypeople share its merit by laying cloth before the Saṅgha. It gives monks five benefits. -
Kathina Is Discipline, Harmony Is Dhamma, and the Kathina Cloth Must Be Pure
Kathina is discipline, but the Buddha's true aim was harmony, which is Dhamma. It is about cloth, not money: monks cannot accept cash, only its value. -
Kathina Questions: Can One Monk Receive It, and How Does It Differ from Pha Pa?
Kathina is a Vinaya act done only in its season, once a year; pha pa can be offered all year. A monk who spent the rains alone can still receive kathina. -
The Merit of Offering the Kathina, and How to Set the Mind for the Most Merit
Kathina merit differs from other giving: receivers and givers each gain five benefits. The giver is dear to many and goes to a good destination hereafter. -

The Pali words for offering the kathina cloth, Imaṃ cīvaraṃ kathinatthāya saṅghassa demi, a full form with meanings, the announcement and kammavācā.
